A Novel of Loss, Injustice, and Revenge, Plus the Art of Receiving Feedback

In this episode 335, we feature author Marjorie Hudson and her novel Indigo Field, which New York Times bestselling author Sue Monk Kidd calls “a mesmerizing story of loss, injustice, and revenge conspiring to darken the human heart.” Plus we share writing insights from Charlotte Lit and from a blog post on how to make the best use of feedback.

Today’s Featured Authors

Marjorie Hudson Time Stamp: 4:55

In Indigo Field, a novel of moral reckoning, the unjust outcome of a murder trial, and the chance accident that follows, result in a feud that raises the spirits of the dead, forcing enemies to become allies in order to survive.

Sarah Archer Time Stamp: 44:14

From Sarah’s blog post “The Art of Receiving Feedback,” we take the following tips:

  • Be gracious when receiving notes and don’t try to argue or convince the reader. Simply take what works for you and let the rest go.
  • Look for patterns in the notes you receive. If more than one person is commenting on the same thing, it’s likely deserving of your attention.
  • Seek feedback from readers and writers with a variety of backgrounds and tastes, but keep in mind that some people’s notes will be more germane to your writing than others’.
  • Look for the note behind the note. Can you get to the root cause of the reader’s reaction, and address it in a way that’s in keeping with your own style?
