Rita Woods “Remembrance” Is a Magical Take on the Black Female Experience Spanning Generations
Podcast: Download (Duration: 27:44 — 25.6MB)
In this episode 91, we visit with Rita Woods, author of “Remembrance.”
Library Journal, with its Starred Review says, “ …This book deserves to be a breakout hit. Woods’s magical realist take on the black female experience will have huge appeal to readers of Marlon James and Tara Conklin.”
Rita’s website shares that “Remembrance” involves “a rumor, a whisper passed in the fields and veiled behind sheets of laundry… a hidden stop on the underground road to freedom, a safe haven protected by more than secrecy…if you can make it there.”
Rita is a Board Certified Internist, currently serving as Medical Director of a Wellness Center that serves one of the largest trade unions in the nation. A former bodybuilder, she lives in suburban Chicago and when she is not busy working or writing, Dr. Woods spends time with her family or at the Homer Glen library where she serves on the Board of Trustees.

About the Author
Rita Woods was born in Detroit, Michigan, the oldest child of two academics. Raised in a heavily, Irish Catholic neighborhood, she says she was an extraordinarily shy, introverted kid, preferring to spend all my time in the library or huddled in my room reading. She had dreams of growing up and traveling the world as a reporter for Time magazine, which now she thinks it is a really weird dream for a shy kid to have.
Rita was first generation college educated. Her parents held strongly to the belief that smart black kids went to college and became doctors or lawyers or business owners. Though they believed in the Arts, it was certainly not something at which one made a living.
So, Rita dutifully headed off to medical school, having been convinced that she could write and travel in her spare time. There was no spare time.
But Rita didn’t totally give up on the dream. She wrote for college papers and entered contests. And while she never became a travel reporter, she did manage to get herself to Mexico and Europe, all over the Caribbean and Alaska. And she became a body builder, married, raised chickens and children, started her own medical practice and ran for a small local office.
Now, she says her kids are big, the chickens are gone (they insisted on escaping and burying themselves in the dirt beneath her neighbors prized dahlias and she was forced to find them a good home) and she practices medicine for a corporation that prizes spare time. She lives in the far southern suburbs of Chicago and is plotting out her next adventure. Remembrance is her first novel.
