Paloma Capanna Deals With the Messy Bits of Life in “Nearly Fifty, A Collection of Essays”

In this episode 135, we visit with Paloma Capanna, author of “Nearly Fifty, A Collection of Essays.”

Part memoir, part women’s lit and part self-help, Capanna says that her book is about how to get through the unscheduled, messy bits in life. It’s what to read when life doesn’t let up, when it feels like you have no options, and when you’d really rather sit down and cry.

Larry Jaffe, poet, author of “Lying Half-Naked in the Doorway,” says that “if you are looking for insight into a life well-lived, then you have come to the right place.”

About the Author:

Paloma A. Capanna is the author of “Nearly Fifty,” a collection of essays written in real time during a two-week period full of seemingly impossible challenges.  After 25 years as a litigation attorney, Paloma is now sharing her insights on how to be unafraid in moving through life. “Nearly Fifty” is as much about love and when to let go and when to hang on.

Paloma is a Board Member-at-Large of Carteret Writers and is a member of the Pamlico Writers Group, the North Carolina Writers Network, and the North Carolina Poetry Society.

Paloma is honored to have won Second Place for “Poetry of Witness” from the North Carolina Poetry Society (2020) and an Honorable Mention for the “Hard Times Essay Contest” from the Writers’ Workshop of Asheville (2019). She also won Second Place in the Carteret Writers 2019 writing contest in poetry and short story categories.  Her short story, “Citizens United,” was also nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Recent publications by Paloma include an essay on adoption in “Flying South 2019” (Winston-Salem Writers) and poetry in “Kakalak 2019” (Main Street Rag Publications). Paloma is currently working on her second collection of essays, “After the Fact,” a humorous and heart-warming account on how to survive one’s parents.

Recent literary events on Paloma’s calendar included teaching a workshop at the Pamlico Writers Conference 2019 on “Giving Voice to the Voiceless” and conducting a workshop at Park Road Books (Charlotte) titled “A Writing Workshop About Love!”  In February 2020, Paloma conducted her first book signing at a national conference in Nashville, TV.  In August 2020, Paloma will be speaking on legal considerations in writing creative non-fiction at HippoCampus in Lancaster, PA.

From 2012-2018, Paloma’s work as an attorney centered around civil rights issues supporting the privacy of mental health records from unauthorized, undocumented government intrusion.  She also forged inroads into the intersection of privacy, due process, and equal protection vis-à-vis the Second Amendment. Two cases in which Paloma represented plaintiffs were taken as far as the United States Supreme Court.  Paloma has published and spoken at national conferences about her field, and is the recipient of related awards, including the “Defender of the Constitution Award” from WYSL and the Shooter’s Committee on Public Education and the “Leadership Award” from New York State Oathkeepers.

Paloma is a graduate of the State University of New York School of Law and she graduated magna cum laude from Wheaton College (MA).  She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Now, Paloma spends her time between the coastal life of the Southern Outer Banks and traveling the East Coast and the Deep South.  She and her partner Kevin are the proprietors of Downton Antiques, LLC (Beaufort, NC).  In her free time, Paloma enjoys walking the beaches of the Outer Banks which are inhabited by several, distinct herds of wild horses.
