Molly Grantham Reveals the Authenticity of Motherhood and Career in “The Juggle is Real”

In this episode 133, we visit with Molly Grantham, author of “The Juggle is Real: The Off-Camera Life of an On-Camera Mom.”

Molly Grantham is a two-time Emmy award winning journalist who has been named TV News Reporter of the Year for both Carolinas, one of Charlotte’s top “40 under 40” and one of Mecklenburg County’s “50 Most Influential Women.”

She is a community philanthropist, anchor of WBTV’s 5:30pm News, and solo-anchors the 11pm show. Her recent memoir, “The Juggle is Real,” picks up where “Small Victories,” left off, and carries the reader through the ups and downs of life and death in the world of a very busy broadcaster and her family.

“The Huffington Post” says: “Molly Grantham’s authenticity as a mom and a fallible human being shines through every one of her pages in this compelling collection of parenting essays.”

Anchor. Author. Mom.

In May of 2020, Molly Grantham released her second book, The Juggle Is Real, which shines a raw and funny light on the messy realities many of us face with the constant rotation of life. The memoir is a continuation of her first book, Small Victories: The Off-Camera Life of an On-Camera Mom. Both are truth-telling accounts of juggling too much, and showing imperfections in relatable ways. A review in the Huffington Post described Small Victories as, “…honesty twisted with humor. You’ll laugh, cry, then want to tell your friends.”

Molly gave a Tedx Talk called “The Real We Are.” It centered around female stereotypes and the need for women to look into their authentic selves rather than hide behind false costumes and masks. Her talk has been viewed and shared tens of thousands of times, in part because it’s not something you expect a television news anchor to say—a woman living out a career that’s quite visual, full of make-up, and harshly judged. You can find her talk on YouTube.

Since arriving in Charlotte in 2003, Molly has covered gangs, terrorism and the fight to legalize cannabis oil in North Carolina. She is also actively involved in Charlotte’s cancer community and well-known for #MollysKids, children with uphill medical battles. Molly follows the battles of over 100 local children a year, networking them together, promoting awareness and helping raise funds for research. Much of it is on her own time and through her active Facebook page.

Cancer has hit Molly’s family hard. Her grandfather died of pancreatic cancer. Her mom died of breast cancer and her father, who she says is her forever hero, died of colon cancer in 2006. Her grandmother also battled breast cancer and her great-grandmother died of the disease years before society felt comfortable even talking about cancer that appears in “breasts.”

Molly and her husband, Wes, have a 9-year-old daughter (Parker), 5-year-old son (Hutch) and a 3rd baby due in July, 2020.

She says in her next life, she wants to be a mermaid.
