Matthew is currently an instructor of English and writing center director at Gardner-Webb University. “Swapping Purples for Yellows” this is his debut novel.

“Swapping Purples for Yellows” is equal parts campus novel and family drama. It centers on an academic family, the Sutherlands, as they endure Homecoming weekend and try to mend the rifts that have appeared between its four members. The novel depicts the dangers of dwelling on the past and encourages the characters to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them to keep from repeating such mistakes.

About the Author

Matthew Duffus was born in Pennsylvania and spent time living in Maryland, Indiana, Mississippi, Minnesota, and Tennessee, before finally settling in North Carolina. Along the way, he received graduate degrees in English and creative writing from the University of Mississippi and the University of Minnesota and worked as a graduate instructor and research assistant, apartment caretaker, bookseller, concessions supervisor, and residence-hall director. He currently teaches and directs the writing center at Gardner-Webb University, in Boiling Springs, N.C.

His creative work has appeared in more than two-dozen publications, including Beloit Fiction Journal, Main Street Rag, Natural Bridge, and Slant. He has also published articles and book chapters on everything from teaching American literature to Ian McEwan’s Atonement to photographic representations of Billie Holiday.

His first novel, Swapping Purples for Yellows, is available now from SFK Press.

His first collection of stories, Dunbar’s Folly, will be published by Unsolicited Press in October 2020.
