Catherine Goodman Farley’s Children Book Collection Explores History, Conservation and Faith in the Low Country

In this episode 123, we meet Catherine Goodman Farley, author of the “Explore with Mimi” children book collection.

The mission of the three book collection is to share lessons in history, conservation and faith with children and their families as they explore the South Carolina Lowcountry with Mimi the deer and her wildlife friends.

Each book takes place on an island. Mimi is mischievous on Seabrook Island, adventurous on Kiawah Island and an explorer on Sullivan’s Island.

About the Author

Catherine Goodman Farley began her serendipitous journey writing children’s books in 2013 by way of a family tradition collecting books when visiting new places. She believes in the childlike spirit of all humans and hopes her stories are a catalyst for positive reflective thinking and a renewed passion for our natural surroundings.

Her Explore with Mimi children’s book series has been a vehicle for interactive speaking engagements to share her journey as an author with aspiring writers, school children, and adults as well. Catherine shares the importance of recognizing our “AHA moments” along our journeys. A few of her most tear tinged ones include witnessing a baby sea turtle beginning a seaward journey, finishing an Olympic distance triathlon, and watching her children take their first steps.  YES, she says is one of those women…a touching song, a fabulous sunset…water-proof mascara required!

Catherine finds tremendous joy connecting in nature…seeing a cardinal land on her back porch while doing dishes, watching a deer in her front yard while clunking down the stairs with a heavy basket of dirty laundry, or noticing a sunflower standing strong on a wind-filled rainy day. Her Catherine’s books have been recognized and reviewed in the South Carolina Wildlife magazine, The Charleston Mercury; by authors Kristy Woodson Harvey and Mary Alice Monroe; by psychologist and author of The Spiritual Child, Lisa Miller and through multiple bloggers, including Charlotte Smarty Pants, Holy City Chic, and Sweet Southern Prep. She appeared on WBTV Morning Break with Kristen Miranda after the release of her second book, Mimi Discovers Sullivans Island and has shared her “story” in a wide array of speaking engagements including the Carolina Outdoors Podcast, the infamous Jesse Browns Storyteller’s Night, panel discussions at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Morrison Library, the “Write Like You Mean It” group at the Uptown Library, and many school classrooms and libraries. Catherine enjoys the challenge of adapting her message and connecting with a variety of audiences.  Afterall, we are all human and yearn to connect!
