Phillip Lewis Takes Us to Old Buckram in “The Barrowfields” – Literary Fiction Set in the North Carolina Mountains

In today’s episode number 63, we meet author Phillip Lewis, who reads and discusses his novel, The Barrowfields.

North Carolinian and New York Times best-selling author Ron Rash describes the book as “beautifully written and deeply moving,” and says that Phillip is a very talented writer with a debut that “deserves a wide and appreciative readership.”

The book is full of literary allusions that might be easy to miss, a bit like being on a treasure hunt. The town of Old Buckram, for example, comes from the word “buckram,” a type of coarse linen that is stiffened with glue and used to make book covers. Phillip’s idea was to have the story take place in Old Buckram, which is to say, within the covers of an old book.

He starts at the beginning, with a reading that offers a prescient view of the old town itself.

About the Author:

Author Phillip Lewis is a Charlotte attorney who was born and raised in West Jefferson in the mountains of North Carolina, a little more than a stone’s throw away from the Virginia and Tennessee lines, and not far from the mythical town of Old Buckram, where the characters disappear and evolve in his novel, The Barrowfields. When Phillip is not handling real-estate litigation cases or writing literary fiction, he studies language, collects rare books, plays music (mostly the piano and the guitar), and reads everything he can get his hands on. The Barrowfields is his first book, but he assures us that it will not be his last. It was published in the United States in 2017, and has now been printed by separate publishing companies in the United Kingdom, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, and France, with a German edition titled Rückkehr Nach Old Buckram (Return to Old Buckram).
