Frank Morelli’s “No Sad Songs” Forces a Teenager to Come to Terms with the Loss of His Parents and a Grandfather with Dementia

In today’s episode number 59, we meet author Frank Morelli, a middle school teacher whose writing talent led him to write his well-received debut novel, “No Sad Songs,” about a teenager forced by the death of his parents to look after a grandfather suffering severe dementia.

In addition to reading and discussing “No Sad Songs,” Frank discusses his essay about the death of his grandfather and introduces us to the first book in his recently published middle grade series, “Please Return to: Norbert M. Finkelstein.”

We start first with a reading from an early chapter in “No Sad Songs,” entitled “How to Find Yourself Alone.”

About the Author:

Frank Morelli’s debut young adult novel, No Sad Songs (2018), was a 2019 YALSA Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers nominee and a VOX top Hopepunk title. His fiction and essays have appeared in numerous publications, including The Saturday Evening Post, Cobalt Review, Philadelphia Stories, and Jersey Devil Press. The first book in his debut middle grade series, Please Return To: Norbert M. Finkelstein, came out in September 2019.

A Philadelphia native, Frank’s life was transformed when he accepted a teaching fellowship in the NYC Public Schools and discovered that a lifetime spent eating cafeteria tater tots would be a small price to pay for a chance to shape the future. He continues to split time between the page and the classroom, and will forever be amazed by how each one enriches the other.

Frank now lives in High Point, NC with his best friend and muse, their obnoxious alley cat, and two hundred pounds worth of dog.
