Scott Fowler Shares His True Crime Podcast, His Carolina Panthers Book and His Young Adult Adventure

In today’s episode number 50, author and long-time Charlotte sportswriter Scott Fowler shows us his varied talents as a writer. Many readers know Scott for his inciteful and entertaining sports coverage for The Charlotte Observer and for his non-fiction sports books, but you might be surprised to know that he’s written a young adult book and that he co-wrote and starred in a true crime podcast that Sports Illustrated called the best podcast of 2018.

The Carruth podcast is available on Apple Podcasts. We play the trailer for the podcast in this episode and discuss the making of the podcast, including Scott’s interview with the hitman in Central Prison and his tracking down Rae Carruth for an interview after he’d served his prison term.

In addition to discussing “Carruth,” the podcast about the infamous Carolina Panther who hired a hitman to shoot his pregnant girlfriend, Scott reads from “Panthers Rising,” a book about the Panthers and how they roared to Super Bowl 50.

Scott also reads and discusses “Lost on the Road to Nowhere,” a young-adult adventure story about four children lost in the N.C. woods.

Scott starts with a read from Panthers Rising called “The Smile Ministry,” about a young man named Chancellor Lee Adams, the child of Ray Carruth and Cherica Adams, the boy who lived when his mother died at the criminal designs of his father.

About Scott Fowler

Scott Fowler is a national award-winning sports columnist for The Charlotte Observer and the author or co-author of nine books, including his most recent “Panthers Rising” (2016). Most of his books are about sports, but in 2012, he published “Lost on the Road to Nowhere,” a young-adult fiction book that has been integrated into several elementary-school curriculums in North Carolina.

If Scott had to pick the favorite stories he has written for The Charlotte Observer, it would be his three award-winning stories in 2015, 2016 and 2017 that make up “The Chancellor Lee Series,” stories about the smiling boy in his opening read who was raised with the loving care of his grandmother, Saundra Adams. These stories led Scott to narrate the hit podcast “Carruth.”

Scott graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a journalism degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1987 and focuses many of his columns on the Carolina Panthers and the NFL. His newspaper stories have won more than 20 national awards, including five No. 1 Associated Press Sports Editor awards.

Scott and his wife Elise live with their four children just outside of Charlotte.
