Kristen Rademacher Takes Readers on an Odyssey of Ill-Fated Love, Devastating Loss, and Resilience

In this episode 187, we visit with Kristen Rademacher, author of From the Lake House: A Mother’s Odyssey of Loss and Love, a memoir of resilience and hope in the face of a devastating loss. This achingly honest memoir explores issues of grief and identity as a woman gives up her dream of motherhood, and leaving an old life behind to forge something new.

Poignant and perceptive, “From the Lake House” explores the echoes of rash decisions and ill-fated relationships, the barren and disorientating days an aching mother faces without her baby, and the mysterious healing that can take root while rebuilding a life gutted by loss.

Carol Henderson, author of “Losing Malcolm: A Mother’s Journey Through Loss and Farther Along: The Writing Journey of Thirteen Bereaved Mothers,” describes the book as a beautifully written and poignant memoir, where “we learn that though people and dreams die, relationships don’t. If we’re attuned, the dead can transform our lives, offering enduring love and guidance–and hope.” Kirkus Reviews calls it “a poignant and painful remembrance with comforting messages for the grieving.”

About the Author:

Kristen Rademacher is an educator and the author of From the Lake House. With a Masters Degree in Education and a Professional Coaching Certification, Kristens career in education spans over thirty years. She was a classroom teacher for thirteen years before making the leap to higher education as an Academic Coach and ADHD Specialist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

From the Lake House: A Mothers Odyssey of Loss and Love, is Kristens debut memoir published by She Writes Press. While this is Kristens first book, she has always had an active writing life, mostly in journals. In fact, the seeds for From the Lake House can be found in the first journals shed kept after losing a baby. She wrote in it regularly, almost obsessively, and much later, Kristen realized that her journaling practice functioned as a sort of lifeboat in those turbulent early days of grief. Over time, Kristen joined a writing group, and through steady work with fellow writers over several years, she soon had the makings of a memoir.

Kristen channels her creativity through writing, cooking, and knitting. She also loves a long mountain hike, an afternoon lost in a juicy book or podcast, and the company of beloved family and friends. Kristen lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
