Lauren Jacobs Brings a Forgotten Female Religious Leader to Life in “Shelamzion: Queen of Israel”

In this episode 161, we visit with Lauren Jacobs, author of ” a work of historical fiction that shines a light on a much-forgotten queen of Israel.

Professor Kenneth Atkinson, author and biblical scholar, says that “Lauren Jacobs has written an exciting novel that captures the spirit of the historical Queen Shelamzion and her tumultuous world. It accurately reconstructs the details of her life and times through an engaging narrative that never fails to entertain, and awe the reader.”

Author Lauren Jacobs says that one of the purposes of this book is to “display the value of female leadership, increase female representation in the Ancient Near East and add value to the theological discussion of female leadership.”

About the Author:

Lauren Jacobs is a multi – award winning author, who focuses on the forgotten stories of women in history. As a historian, her focus lies deeply in the ancient near east and in the world of Eastern women.

Vocal about injustice, she worked as a justice journalist writing on issues of gendercide, gender-based violence, child brides and female education in developing nations for over a decade. She now hosts her own social justice show on national radio in South Africa.

She was a Ted Talk speaker in 2018, addressing the topic of “where are our women: a forgotten history!” Her talk addressed the reality of who writes history and why are women still underrepresented in historical narratives.

She is also an ordained pastor, and works hard to readdress issues of gender inequality within faith communities and theology. She holds a number of postgraduate qualifications, and is currently pursuing another one in Ancient Near Eastern studies.
