Sara Johnson Takes Readers to the Wilds of New Zealand In Her Alexa Glock Mystery “The Bones Remember”

In this episode 151, we visit with Sara Johnson, author of the mystery novel, “The Bones Remember,” the second book in the Alexa Glock forensic mystery series.

Like the first novel in the series, “The Bones Remember” is set on a New Zealand island where forensic investigator Alexa Glock must deal with the controversy of shark cage diving tourism in her effort to solve two murders. Set against a down under and rugged landscape of land and sea, Alexa confronts the jaws of death and those who love and hate the shark cage diving industry in her pursuit to land the real killer.

Publisher’s Weekly calls protagonist Alexa Glock a “refreshingly normal heroine” and one Net Galley reviewer gave the book high marks, saying: “This was a quick and thrilling read [with] characters [so] beautifully flawed [that] sometimes I wanted to yell at them, but that’s what makes a book enjoyable.”

About the Author:

Sara E. Johnson is a mystery writer who spent a year exploring wondrous New Zealand.

Her debut novel is Molten Mud Murder (2019) and her second novel is The Bones Remember (September, 2020), both published by Poisoned Pen Press/Soucebooks. Both books are part of the Alexa Glock Forensic Mystery series set in New Zealand.

She lives in Durham, North Carolina with her husband Forrest and golden doodle Beaufort. She is a part-time educator and full time snooper.

A Bit About Sara’s Adventure to New Zealand

People ask Sara how she got the idea to write the Alexa Glock mysteries set in New Zealand. It started when her husband proposed living in Aotearoa, “the land of the long white cloud,”  for a year. She wondered if she could we do it?  She left her teaching job at a Chapel Hill middle school, her three children (the youngest was a college sophomore), and her cat, to find out.

Her first glimpse of the Southern Alps from an airplane left her chilled: jagged rows of snow-capped peaks raked the spine of the South Island not far from where we rented a house in Christchurch. The Canterbury area welcomed she and her husband with a three day “active front” which blew cars off the road and two trees down in their back “garden.” She loved the newspaper headline describing gusts of more than 222 kmh: “By Crikey it was windy.”
